Research at P2F
A central challenge of P2F is the conversion of the surplus energy into the energy of chemical bonds. With the help of the electric power, an electrolysis can produce, for example, hydrogen that can be stored and continues to be used or further processed. On long-term view, the intention is to achieve the directly electro catalytic reduction of CO2. But this still requires fundamental research.
The reduction of CO2 can principally produce hydrocarbons and oxygenates as a fuel. Due to the high kinetic inhibition of the reduction through the application of an electrolysis or a reaction with hydrogen, the integrated development of catalysts and processes is of critical importance.
In order to achieve the highest level of conversion efficiency, the improvement of engine and fuel are closely linked. The motor operating parameters must be appropriate for the fuel that is won from the process. The goal of the research is to characterize a “Flex-Fuel Engine” that is adaptable to various fuels. Simulation models will be developed to describe the fuel influence as fast as possible.
One of the main goals of the Competence Center is the drafting of an overall concept for an optimal integration of all single processes in the process chain from power generation, fuel production to its use. Methods of an integrated process analysis will be developed and applied. A continuous process improvement with the fuel as a freedom degree is the main research interest of P2F.
